Frequently Asked Questions
How do Canadian income taxes work?
Canada has progressive taxation: income is taxed in layers (brackets), each layer at a higher rate. You pay federal tax to Ottawa and provincial tax to your province, calculated separately.
What is the basic personal amount?
The first ~$16,000 of everyone's income is essentially tax-free through non-refundable credits. Both federal and provincial levels have their own BPA.
Are CPP and EI included?
They're optional toggles above because this tool is for getting a general idea. CPP (Canada Pension Plan) and QPP (Quebec) are retirement contributions; EI (Employment Insurance) insures against job loss. Quebec uses QPIP instead of standard EI.
Why doesn't my real paycheque match?
Real payroll includes other items this estimate skips: RRSP/pension contributions, union dues, benefits premiums, other credits, and exact employer withholding tables.
