What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is an emerging web standard (proposed in 2024) that lives at the root of your site — like robots.txt, but for AI models. It gives large language models a clean, human-written map of your most important pages in markdown, so they can answer questions about your site accurately instead of guessing from raw HTML.

AI crawlers and answer engines increasingly look for it when deciding what to cite. Pair it with a crawler policy using our robots.txt generator and polish your page markup with the meta tag generator.

How do I use the generated file?

Save it as llms.txt at the root of your website (e.g. https://yoursite.com/llms.txt) exactly like you would a robots.txt file. Keep it short — link only your best 10–30 pages, each with a one-line description that an AI can lift directly into an answer.

What goes inside an llms.txt file?

An H1 with your site name, a one-paragraph summary of what the site does, then optional H2 sections (Docs, Products, Blog, FAQ…) each containing markdown links with short descriptions. An optional ## Optional section at the end can list secondary pages AI may skip when short on context.

Does llms.txt replace sitemap.xml?

No. A sitemap lists every crawlable URL for search engines; llms.txt is a curated, annotated shortlist written for language models. Use both: the sitemap for discovery, llms.txt for understanding.
