How it works

This uses your browser's location API to watch your GPS position continuously. When your device reports speed directly, that value is used; otherwise speed is calculated from the distance and time between consecutive GPS fixes. Readings are smoothed slightly to reduce jitter, and max/average speed accumulate across your whole session until you reset.

Is this accurate enough to rely on while driving?

No — GPS speed can lag or drift, especially at low speed or weak signal. Use your vehicle's speedometer for driving, and never look at a phone while operating a vehicle.

Why does the reading jump around at low speed?

GPS position accuracy is typically a few meters, a bigger relative error at low speed. Readings stabilize above roughly 5 mph / 8 km/h.

Does this work indoors?

No — GPS needs a clear view of the sky, so it won't get an accurate fix indoors or in dense urban canyons.
