How the math works

Mean (the average)

Add every value together and divide by the count.

mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n

Median (the middle)

Sort the values. With an odd count, take the middle one. With an even count, average the two middle values.

Mode (the most frequent)

The value that appears most often. A list can have one mode, several modes, or none if all values are unique.

Range & standard deviation

range = max − min

Standard deviation measures spread: sample SD uses n − 1 in the denominator (best for a sample of a larger group); population SD uses n.

Frequently asked

When should I use the median instead of the mean? When outliers skew the mean. For salaries or home prices, the median is often more representative.

Can the mode be a non-integer too? Yes — the mode is just whichever number repeats most, integers or not.
